PCA Zone 1 TECH TACTICS
March 5th & 6th in Springfield,
MA |
Several Staff Members of the POWERTECH Company attended
the PCA's 25th Annual Zone 1 Tech Tactics for a two-day seminar
held on the weekend of March 5 & 6 at the Sheraton Hotel
in Springfield Massachusetts. During the weekend, many topics
were covered; Early 911 Lubrication System Upgrades, Safety
Harnesses, and Transmission Rebuilding.
Of the many presentations and lectures covering those two
days, the most interesting from our perspective were Jim Newton’s
slide show presentation of his step-by-step restoration of
a 356 Speedster that he had restored keeping the car completely
original, and Joe Marco of HMS MotorSports description of
what happens to safety harnesses in a collision. Joe discussed
how safety harnesses can stretch up to 5 inches in a crash
and how the sun weakens harnesses reducing their longevity
from 4 years to 2 years. We found out that it is possible
for weakened belts to snap in a 30 mph crash!
Another very interesting lecture came from Porsche factory
speaker, Uwe Reuter. He spoke about the 997 and how its front
suspension spindles were constructed of hollow aluminum to
be lighter and stronger; how the larger wheel bearings contribute
to longevity, and how the front control arm bushings were
hydraulic to maintain stiffness with less vibration.
In addition, the technical speaker, Peter Smith discussed
little known facts about the Carrera GT such as; how it takes
12 hrs to change a headlamp bulb; that the GT has two Bosch
ECU’s - one for each side of the motor because each
side works independently; and most importantly, you must strap
the GT down onto the lift because its lift points will cause
it to flip off the lift!
Last but not least, Brian Redman famous racecar driver presented
an excellent speech sharing his past experiences in racing.
All of these seminars were informative and great fun. Some
of us are anticipating going to the next 26th Annual Tech
Tactics in 2006. See you there! |

TIPS OF THE MONTH |
| |
Seat
Back Defect -- On the 996 T, the
front passenger seat backs do not meet Porsche's
strength standards. In the event of a rear-end
crash, the occupied seat back could tilt on one
side to the rear, increasing the risk of severe
injury. See your Dealer for more information
and service. |

| |
Radio
Replacement -- Certian 2003 911T
(996) and 911GT2 vehicles with the standard radio
option or Digital Sound system options cannot
select another station using the presets due to
an internal software error. See your Dealer
for more information and service. |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
 |
Oil
Accuracy -- Checking your oil
level by the oil gauge in any Boxster will not
be as accurate as checking the dip stick. |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| |
All
Heat -- The 944 Heater unit clips
are plastic and break, therefore it seems the
heat is never off and as if the A/C isn't working
properly. See images >> |
