TIPS OF THE MONTH
Clogged Catalytic Converters -- An often-overlooked area when diagnosing poor engine performance, a clogged catalytic converter can rob your engine of 30 or more horsepower. In the past (pre 1990 model years) cats were made with a core design that would easily melt. Erratic early design narrow band oxygen sensors would also give false information to engine control computers, causing too lean or too rich fuel conditions. With modern steel cats and wide band oxygen sensors, cat converter meltdowns are far less frequent and thus unexpected. A simple backpressure test is all that is required for instant diagnosis.

996, Turbo, GT3, and Boxster coolant reservoir tank cracks -- This problem is borderline epidemic! We have seen many premature tank failures in these models. Early tank failure signs are smell (the smell of antifreeze – most common) and obvious leaks and coolant loss. The replacement-updated tanks have thicker plastic in the weak areas and a re-design of the supports.

* * You can purchase a new coolant tank by contacting Jake in Parts at parts@pwr-tech.com

Boxster and 996 convertible tops not going up or down? -- This problem may be as simple as a $10 hand brake switch. The hand brake must be pulled up for the cabriolet top computer to know that the car is stopped. A defective hand brake switch will not tell the computer that the brake is on. A simple fix to a simple problem is ordering a new switch from Powertech Parts. Just contact Jake in Parts at parts@pwr-tech.com.

Modern Porsche Tire Replacement -- With the advent of sophisticated electronics and computers controlling our cars now, correct tires are critical for accurate ABS brake operation, traction control, and stability management. Even minor differences in tires from left to right and front to rear can affect the computers ability to calculate what the car is doing, and thus control the needed changes. Small differences in tires can also affect suspension alignment changes and make it difficult to track straight and true when on the street or road course. The days of replacing tires individually or even in pairs are gone. Replace tires in sets of four and save yourself a lot of potential grief.
