TIPS
OF THE MONTH |

Brake
Pad Selection - "How to pick the
compound that suits you best"
A common question with people buying brake pads for track use
is “which compound should I use?” The answer is
usually simple : The compound that does the least damage to
your brake discs. Brake pads are designed to operate within
specific temperature ranges, and they have a coefficient of
friction number when used within that range. A brake pad compound
that is very soft will usually be designed to operate at a
lower temperature range, have a higher coefficient of friction,
and will usually be very kind to the brake discs. A soft compound
will also usually wear at a faster rate. A hard compound pad
will be just the opposite : higher temperature range, lower
coefficient friction, and very aggressive wear on the discs.
Harder compound pads are usually easier to modulate while softer
are usually easier. In stock racing classes, where brake bias
valves can not be altered from original, you can run different
pad compounds front and rear to effectively “bias” your
brakes and improve brake performance. At Powertech, we have
a large comprehensive inventory of brake pads for every application,
along with the knowledge as to what pads will work best for
you, with great prices.

Axles & C.V.
Joints - Can they be examined externally?
The Truth's & Myth's

of damaged joint)
An often overlooked area, drive axles and C.V. (Constant Velocity)
joint failure can be the difference between a good day and
bad. A broken joint will not allow the power to go from the
transmission to the wheel, leaving you stranded. The problem
with externally examining the axles and joints is that wear
is very difficult, if not impossible, to determine without
disassembling and inspecting the wear areas. A common misconception
is that the axle can be moved hard from side to side to determine
wear (see
pic). This in fact is not true. The joints on the
axle are designed to move laterally to allow for effective
length changes in the axle as the suspension moves throughout
it’s travel range. The correct way to determine joint
play is to grab the joint in one hand and the axle in another
and twist the two together and apart in a rotating manner (see
pic). This will check both the play between the
joint and the axle, as well as the play in the joint itself.
Remember, this method is just a rough guide to determine joint
condition. An axle service (disassemble, clean, inspect, re-pack,
and reassemble) is the ONLY way to accurately diagnose axle
and joint wear. We recommend axle services anywhere from every
year on high horsepower track cars, to every ten years for
normal driven street cars – depending of course on the
mileage.

Airbag recall -- Here
is an interesting recall that you want
to make sure is taken car of. This
may give a whole new meaning to blowing
your horn.... "Inadvertent
deployment of the air bag can occur.
Deployment of the airbag without warning
could cause a driver to lose vehicle
control." - Porsche Service Bulletin.
