    997 GT3 Coolant System Failure

    Hello,

    Do you have a recommended fix for the dreaded coolant hose failure on the 997.1 GT3s. I have read of and seen parts which are welded to hold the hoses in place and reduce the likely hood of a possible coolant hose failure. Has your shop encountered any such projects, any recommendations? I had a coolant hose failure in August, luckily no one was hurt but it seems like a flawed coolant system.

    We are aware of this issue and we do have the ability to install weld on hose ends so that the ends do not come out of the housing. It will not help with the possibility of a hose breaking or of a hose popping off. We typically install additional clamps around the hoses to prevent the hoses from popping off.

    Are there better hoses which will prevent the failure or is it due to the design of the system?

    The problem is not the hoses; it is where the hose tube goes into the casting. The tube is epoxyied in place and the epoxy fails over time. The solution is to remove the assembly, remove the original epoxy, and re-epoxy or weld the tube in place. Our preference is to weld it so it can never possibly come out again. No fun spinning on your own coolant!!

    What about the "pinning" solution? (as opposed to the welding, engine out routine) Seems like a reasonable alternative. I have to think Porsche did not want those fittings welded for a reason. (ie, vibration cracking, flexing, etc)

    BTW -- each fix will void warranty. I've also been looked at crossed eyed by the dealer regarding water/water wetter temp gap until such a time the car is out of warranty.

    Love to hear thoughts...

    A pinning solution is possible as well. It would require drilling through the casting and the portion that was epoxied in place. At that point we would need to tap the hole and insert a fastener with sealant on the threads. Porsche did not weld the fittings or pin the fittings likely because of manufacturing costs. The fitting would have a rubber hose on it so the hose would do all of the flexing, not the fitting itself.

    The fix would likely void the warranty but the options are to void the warranty or hope you don't have that problem and hope you don't spin or cause someone else to spin in your antifreeze.

    Would switching to water wetter still cause a spin in the event of a failure? Is it usable for daily driving?

    Filling the cooling system to straight water with water wetter could still cause a spin, but the chances are less because it is not nearly as slippery as antifreeze. It would be similar to going from a dry surface to a wet surface at speed, everyone hates to do that. It would also reduce the amount of clean up needed.

    It is usable for daily driving however you need to keep in mind that you have straight water in the car. It would need to be changed back to antifreeze as the temperatures get colder again to prevent freezing. If you have a heated garage then that wouldn't be as much of an issue. Just be very mindful and do not let the cooling system freeze!!

    We are working on our 3rd failure this season alone.

    This is something that everyone with a GT3 or Turbo should have on the things to do list!!
